Phantom of the Opera

They now have a trailer that is less likely to cause an epilectic seizure in the unwary. It looks like it could be *very* good. PotO is not the best musical out there, and in fact some people like to denounce it or anything Andrew Lloyd Webber does, but I for one do like it. I also think it is a better *theoretical* choice for a movie than Chicago (though the actual implementation might still suck, who knows).

And look, it opens on Dec. 22. For the past 3 years, I have done a go see the latest Lord of the Rings film for my birthday party. Now they are done, but look, a new musical 2 days after my birthday. So I hereby say that I, and whomever I can talk into it, shall go see this film opening night. Helen and I leave for Toronto the day after, but that shouldn't preclude my ability to see a new muscial hit theatres. More details to come.

This is based on the musical, not the book?
(I remember that the musical was *way* lighter than the book, so i'm wondering which the movie is based on...)
If i'm in town, i'd be very interested in seeing it.

Hmmm...I still haven't forgiven Joel Schumacher for Batman and Robin. But perhaps this provides a more appropriate outlet for his particular sort of camp.

I always saw the Phantom as older - like Hannibal Lecter...

Nonetheless, I love the look of the trailer - the theatre coming back to life looks amazing. We leave for Toronto and environs the 23rd as well, but if we're packed already we may just join you.

I saw the preview as well when we saw Bridget Jones. I saw Phantom in Toronto many years ago. A great spectacle with a rather weak score, to my thinking. The movie appeared to have more horses and underwater scenes than I recall from the play, so I think I will add it to my to-see list, if only out of curiosity. I am always keen to see adaptations to see what choices they made.

Personally I prefer Webber's stuff when he was collaborating with Rice. His newer stuff seems a little more about spectacle than substance. As Shakespeare would say "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". Have you any plans to see The Lady in White?

Despite it's technical simplicity, there is somethign about Phantom's music that hits me. It is all spectacle, absoluately, but what a spectacle!

I have never heard of they lady in white. I took a look online, and there is a 1988 movie with Len Cariou, is there a new version, or are you referring to this one? I am very curious. Len Cariou was in Sweeney Todd amidst others, a strong actor I think.

I know nothing of woman in white, but I'd be happy to hear it or see it. I won't be trying to hard though, not without knowing more to commend it.
