Went to the bike shop yesterday and took a look at the more expensive model of the bike I am pondering. The frame is the same, so the idea was to see whether I even fit on this type of bike, and whether they then bother assembling the model I actually want which did in fact come in. Well I did fit, though they had to raise the seat high enough that it looked a little silly perched like a full foot or so above the bar. Still, it was low enough that the seat is safe, and the handlebars are capable of rotating up a little as well if i want them to (though I shouldn't need it). It was certainly worth the next step, which is the test drive. I am hoping to do that tonight, they are assembling the model I would actually buy so I can get a proper test drive. Providing they actually do get it built up for tonight, then I can try it out. I may just have a bike soon. I will need to toss in the obligatory bell and headlight, and I am thinking I may want to buy a replacement seat that is more comfortable. They will trade in the seat the bike comes with for $20 off another seat. That probably undervalues the seat I am replacing, but that's ok. I am thinking of those seats with gel cushions, I just can't abide those hard skinny plastic things, I feel like they will give me a callous on my bum which is just a wholly unplesant concept.
The only other thing I need to decide is whether I want to get those spandex biking shorts. As it is, I have only one pair of shorts, my swim trunks, ........ and that's it. If not for those, I am biking in long pants which is not always a comfortable notion. If I am going to bike to and from work, which is a goal, I am going to be doing it regularly enough that long sleeve pants would be both uncomfortable, and magnets for bike chain grease. Of course, it's also a matter of getting bike shorts to fit me. I suppose I could just buy some more regular shorts, that would probably work as well.
Wheeeee, a bike. I haven't had a bike in several years now. After this it's just a matter of getting one for Helen, and we can go biking together. Nesia is already looking forward to the 2 of us taking a spin or two.
