I fenced yesterday. It was my first fencing pretty much since rehersals started, and probably my last until the show is done. I am out of practice something feirce, but I still have a certain level of basic skill. I sparred with Willy until I was tired enough that I was just getting stupid. We went about 60-40 in his favour (and his sword is 6" longer than mine), and later I fenced lrt (my god, how long has that been), and went about 50-50, same sized swords (giving me a slight reach advantage with my arms). Again, I went until I pretty much had to stop, or rather, I could have continued, but at the cost of some level of body/health integrity. I look forward to getting back to this more regularly after the play is over. We then went to the diner afterwards where I had JELLO. They have jello in the desert menu now, that was a nice touch.

The BC supreme court has ruled that blocking same sex marriages is unconstitutional, just like Ontario did several months back. Hurrah! They instead proposed a new definition of marriage..."the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others,".

WTF?

So they want to remove the prohibition against same sex unions, but add a legally defined component of exclusivity? There is a reason our wedding vows did not mention exclusivity, there is a reason we said "I promise to love you above all others", because it implied there damn well wood be others (kisses to Nesia). *sigh* one battle at a time, right? Same sex unions affects more people overall, and is closer to cultural acceptance than any model of non-monogamy is, so let's fight that battle first I suppose. It's not like I actually want to marry a second person, I just want to have relationships with them, and they aren't about to hunt me down for that.

Overall, the ruling is progress. The federal government, which did appeal the Ontario ruling, has not decided whether to appeal the BC ruling. Something about the more provincial governments that do this, the less it's obvious that it's an isolated ruling. We'll see what happens, if they don't appeal, that would pretty much be it, they'll have to change the law. It's promising, but far from a done deal.
