I have seen the superstar, and 'lo, he is Jesus Christ. The show yesterday was, in my humble opinion, quite good.
Vocally, it was very good. The leads had solid capable voices, there were no flubs in tone or lines, it was great. We had a replacement for Judas (which means after all the hype, I still did not get to see Carl Anderson), however he was a most capable replacement, with a bit of a gravelly voice, but gravelly suited him, and he sounded good with it. Jesus needed to enunciate a touch mroe in places, but he was still spot on apart from that. Mary, ....wow, Mary was .....wow. And she's HOT, va-va-va-VOOOM, both Helen and I were quite impressed by her physical assets in addition to her vocal assets.
The staging was also great. Those of you who have seen the 2000 movie have already seen a lot of the imagery, very modern, very street, the romans and priests in black floor length coats, the apostles in jeans, cargo pants, muscle shirts, etc... crowd members in a lot of black with black fedoras, etc... The stage was simple, 2 levels with steps from downstage to upstage, and a walkway suspended above the stage and crossing 2 pillars, that's about it. It worked well though.
If I have a beef, it's the choreography, there was to much of it. Rather, the choreography looked like choreography. There were to many dance numbers, numbers that were means to look like dance numbers where they should have had people movie about a little more naturally. It's wasn't a crippling issue, but still, it detracted from the show. Other small issues are, Caiphas was a little over-acted, stunning base voice, good look, but over acted, Herod was a little under acted, the chorus members around him made him almost invisible, a few points of direction I disagreed with which I won't go into here, but all this is quibbling really, it was still a good show.
Things to watch for if you go.
-The big priest, you will see who I mean, the richest base voice I have heard in a while
-Annas - he's so cute. The man is 5' nothing, ok I don't know how tall he is, but he's totally tiny
-Mary's figure, ok I mentioned this already, but I wanted to make sure no one forgot
-Stay until the very end of curtain call, they throw a touch more music at the end to say goodbye with. I could sing along without Helen elbowing me.
