Mar. 17th, 2004 10:24 amWhat is the deal with St. Patrick's day? I have never felt anything for this day. If you ask me, I will say it's Wednesday. If someone says that it's also St. PAtrick's day, I will probably say something like "is it.....oh, ok *shrug*". I may or may not remember a few hours later.
Don't get me wrong. I like pubs, I like a pint of guiness, I like some nice irish fiddle music, I like that atmosphere. Honestly though, I like it on every day except this day when the pub will would probably be overrun by hooting people quaffing green beer (and some of you know the definition of quaffing as I consider it). Beer is not green. It's a nice golden ranging down a dark nutty brown, usually with a bit of white foam. Something to relax and enjoy while listening to music or talking with friends. The irish invented many fine beers. Guess what....NONE of them are green. I can understant the irish getting excited. It's their day, ok sure. In some ways, it's the same reason I get excited on December 5th since I am dutch. But the whole world seems to go nuts this day. What's the appeal. What's so special about warping the colour of your beer, and going to a pub or bar that's 3 times as crowded as normal?
I don't get it. Today is Wednesday. That's all it is....to me anyways. I don't even notice it's arrival until someone perky offers me a carboard cutout of a 4 leaf clover and I look at it in confusion before it dawns on me. I don't think I am being curmudgeonly, I am just confused over why it's so special for so many people.
