Went to the all-candidates debate for Carleton Mississippi-Mills last night. What a different landscape than Ottawa West.

Gordon O'Connor is an ass, an arrogant, dismissive, apparently uncaring, pompous.... I mean, I don't like John Baird's policies, I don't especially like his approach to politics, and his political personality, but I am willing to say he probably cares about Ottawa West, and he can speak, and listen to people. Mr. O'Connor looked bored to be at the debate. Apparently he simply refuses to go to what he calls single-issue debates (declining to go to debates hosted by a Kanata women's group, and another similar debate which I forget right now). He is dismissive. He had many responses along the lines of "We have no plans to address that", he literally had some answers that were done in about 5 seconds. A common line was also "That's a municipal matter, therefore not an issue for federal candidates" (I use quotes here as paraphrasing, not true quote).

That man pissed me off. The Green candidate also kind of annoyed me. He was a nice guy, well spoken, but he basically ignored the time limit, frequently going past his alloted time for response, WAAAY past his time, he just kept talking. I started applauding (softly) in the middle of his sentence after time was up, thinking he'd get the point...he didn't.

The Liberal candidate was definitely passionate, though didn't always articulate himself well. He seemed a bit out of place, wearing a leather jacket (though I'd be the last to say candidate *must* wear a suit, so ok). He got a bit rant happy at times, but he had his facts.

The NDP candidate was a nice surprise. I was supporting him, because I knew him, but he was still easily the best spoken, articulate, respectful of time limits, minimized attacks (and kept attacks to the policy, and not the person).

Today, I am listening to the leader's debate as my background listening at work. I have to say, Gilles, Mr. Duceppe, shut the F#$K up and let people talk. So far Elizabeth May and Jack Layton are carrying themselves very very well, although Mr. Layton is still carrying himself a little like a used car salesman. Stephen Harper is doing a defensive dance and strikes me as kind of uncomfortable. Stephane Dion is doing ok. English isn't his forte, we knew that, but his performance so far is passable.

I just realized the company christmas party is on my birthday.

I did not authorize this. I mean, it's ok party as company parties go, but I'd rather do something different on my birthday proper.

Hm...we'll see. It is at least a chance to wear my Sherwani jacket, which I don't get to wear often enough (and which might swim on me now...I should check that).
